I had a chance to swing by the shop recently to pick up a grey ransom tee and check out the collection and I definitely co-sign the materials and overall construction of the garments. Kydd-Missing Elements (Music Video)

I told you this dude had my attention.Even if the video is a bit dated, it's something that I still find myself coming back to. The concept and setting are so beautiful and it's a great change from the typical rap video format (aspiring rap music video directors, take notes PLEASE). The song itself carries a vibe that is almost completely foreign nowadays in urban music, which I think is great, plus it's easy to allow yourself to be immersed in Kydd's sheer lyrical conviction as well as the story that unfolds.

Lincoln relinquishes the visuals for one of the joints off of his "Lincoln High" project and I must say that the video does an excellent job of conveying the story told in the song as well as capturing the tone of Lincoln's heartfelt lyrics. Without trying too hard to break out of the box and by sticking to contemporary conventions used in videos based on this subject matter, the "You + Me" music video turns out to be quite a nice visual experience. Props to the director, Nigel Powers.

Herschel Supply Co., a brand that has experienced an explosion of popularity within the last 2 years looks to really take their designs and material selection to a new level. While maintaining their signature heavy canvas on many of the bags, it's clear that we're going to be seeing a lot more experimentation with materials such as Coduroy, as indicated above. Slight re-branding and touch ups to other signature elements such as the traditionally red lining inside the bag look to be subjected to some change as well.

I'm looking forward to a final release for the new line. You should be too.

I'm very glad to see the brand putting out the durable cut and sew items that helped to propel it into the spotlight. Gilbere Forte - Eye Of Veritas

This guy has been quickly taking over the rap game (and my playlists) for the past year and a half and for good reason. This dude is seriously the whole package! A talented producer with his own sound, a great rapper and songwriter and even a great vocalist/singer (watch out Drake), no wonder he made last years list. Eyes Of Veritas is a project that is really diverse and has something for everyone as well as pretty much any mood. The music really is meant to fit moments in your life and can do an excellent job if you let it.

To be honest, this tape kinda slapped me outta nowhere. I had heard a lot about this A$AP Rocky cat and the whole purple swag thing but didn't really look into it until recently. I'm glad as hell that I did though cause the tape is nothing but awesome. It's such a dope fusion of southern and Harlem vibes. This tape really made me appreciate chopped and screwed music more than anything else I've ever heard. Love the way this dude flows too.

Gilbere Forte & Sean Rose - Smmer Time + Sunshne + Nghtfall

Oh would you look at that, another Gilbere tape, only this time created in tandem with Sean Rose. With this project they were really looking to capture what summer sounds like and personally, I feel like they couldn't have hit the nail on the head any better. The tape really captures the feeling of a cool summer evening outside. The production is absolutely nuts in the sense that every track is actually incredibly complex in it's construction (eq and pitch changes, parametric modulation all over the place, well used compression and more for anyone who like me, is a bit of a production geek). No song on this project ever feels like it's been under or overdone. I've definitely had a lot of "Hangin' Out The Window" and "Herfection" moments in 2011 and I'm sure you've had em too (DL the tape and you'll understand).

Neako - The Number 23

I know what you are probably thinking..."this cover looks like some sort of cracked out LSD explosion"...well I can assure you that it would be a mistake to judge the music by the craziness of the cover. Neako, a Taylor Gang affiliate who's career I have been following for a while now unleashed "The Number 23" earlier this year and it has stayed in heavy rotation ever since. It's full of those witty World Gang lifestyle raps that Neako has been giving us for a while now and I think it's safe to say that this is the best tape he's put out so far. As a producer, you can tell that he's aiming to take out some of the larger cats out right now in that facet of the hip hop world and his lyricism is always improving. The tape as a whole has definitely inspired me to work harder at crafting instrumentals as well.

I told ya'll that I would be posting more of this guys music! Def Sound's "bitchtape" is not nearly as misogynistic as the name might suggest, that I can assure you. I suppose you can say that for me, he is this years "different rapper". His sound is definitely far from mainstream, and not at all the typical underground...in fact some might go as far as to call it "hipster rap", but if there is one thing that can be said for sure about the project, it's that it's DOPE. On both production and lyrical levels the tape offers super unique tracks that stray very far from the typical mold that a lot of up and comers use. Dude definitely has bars, even if they do require a bit of thinking and are a little "weird" for lack of better terms (that's typically a good thing though). Support him!

Sir Michael Rocks - The Rocks Report

Excluding the skits, this is one of the few tapes I can honestly say I could play through without skipping a track. Sir Michael Rocks (one half of The Cool Kids), does what he does best...talking about cool shit in a really cool way (lol). No really though, Michael Rocks just has a certain way that he goes about describing situations that just makes them sound so much more interesting and vivid and I always enjoyed bumping this mixtape because of that. The rhymes that Rocks laced really touched on some thoughts that I had throughout the year pertaining to a lot of things like success, the opposite sex and just life in general. Production wise, all the beats are super tight and there is lots of variety (hard to achieve with a tape of this size too) and they all match the subject matter very well.

Luu Breeze - #HollaLaLuuie

The amount of times I've played songs from this tape...smh. Of all the mixtape releases from our Canadian talent, this is definitely my favorite one this year (no disrespect to the other cats I posted about). #HollaLaLuuie is just such a solid and overall very polished effort from Luu Breeze and is a great showcase of his ability to not only rap his face off, but craft actual songs as well (you know...those things that have the potential to turn into hit records). He chose some excellent beats as well from the likes of Boi-1da, Burd (or Burd & Keyz) and more. This was the soundtrack to many of my days as well as many of my nights and I found many notable bars that corresponded with how I felt...*Takes Over The Night*.

Dom Kennedy - The Original Dom Kennedy

Dom Kennedy's consistency is something few artists are blessed with. Although a little shorter than I would have liked, this project still gives us that signature laid back rhyme style that we know and love and the beats are just nice as hell. I had this on repeat for the majority of the summer and for good reason, I mean, it is from a Los Angeles native, so it's only makes sense that this would feel like the type of music you'd play while chilling in the sun (perhaps enjoying some illegal substances with homies, if you are into that).

Well there you have it, my little list of my favorite mixtapes for this year. It's definitely a little shorter than what's been offered in the past years, but, I have been caught up with my own musical adventures...and of course, life happens. Regardless of those things though, I knew that I still had to come through and drop some quality Hip Hop (+an RnB joint) that I hope even those who aren't avid hip hop listeners can enjoy. I really mean that previous statement too because this blog like I've said previously was never meant to be a random hip hop blog. Instead this was meant to be a place where people could find things that could potentially inspire them or where open minded viewers could allow themselves to be introduced to ideas, music, videos and more that they could surprisingly become interested in.

Anyway...

In conclusion, I would like to say to the few who take the time out of their day to look at my little blog, thank you so much. Even though I only net a minuscule 1k of views per month, I am extremely grateful to have had you pass through.

Serious changes will be underway soon, as I realized that I have a vision for this blog that has evolved and become much larger than what it was when I began it and even if I were to close this blog down, I can assure you that it's because I have plans for much better blogging in the future (don't worry you'll get a heads up) .

I had the pleasure of seeing this cat work in his studio and getting to try his/a drum machine for the first time, which was an interesting experience. He's a super dope producer who definitely should get more shine for a person with his skill level. Here, he totally kills a beat while simultaneously putting it together, sampling an iconic game show many of us watched.

P.S. I attempted to sample the same show...and failed horribly in comparison lol.

This is just a great compilation project that was originally started by Durty Keyz (R.I.P.), one half of the crazy production duo Burd & Keyz based out of Toronto. It's not only an excellent showcase of the talent that the two producers as well as some of our best hometown rappers have, but it's also what I would consider to be some real Toronto music. Right off the bat, the tape captures the laid back, splashed with a tinge of jazz, signature sound that has stayed consistent in our urban music scene for the past decade and a half.

First thing I thought once I heard this track and the way the instrumental was mixed in order to create a rhythmic and rapid descent in pitch was "wow...that was an incredible idea...VERY creative indeed...". Drake continues to prep us for his sophomore release "Take Care" with this almost seemingly "So Far Gone" inspired slow jam on which he croons to us about a woman (sounds a bit familiar doesn't it) and how...well...I won't ruin the subject matter for you, but once again I feel that is a track that many of us will relate to...oh yea, Lil Wayne delivers a few quotable bars as well.

Jiberish Fall 2011 Lookbook from Michael Clarke on Vimeo.I stumbled across this lookbook video for the brand Jiberish (a denver based streetwear brand) and I just found it to be another excellent example of a very well put together video, that not only showcased the clothing well, but also succeeded in conveying the lifestyle that the brand represents. The video fun, upbeat, boasts an excellent soundtrack and well utilized visual effects and camera angles which all together just culminate into something noteworthy in my opinion.

It's a good thing Drake took the safer route by having a video concept that really reinforced the message of the song along with giving an appropriate nod to his hometown with many of the shots used (wise considering how many people I have spoken to believed that his ability to rep Toronto was not nearly as apparent as he claims it is). The editing on this one is pretty damn nice too imo.

My only question about this video is...how much did dude make off of the Nike placement? lol...

We get another release from Drizzy, this time in the form of the video for Marvin's Room, the track that has been on constant rotation in almost everyones iTunes since release. The tone and cinematography is very simple and the slight bloom is very tasteful and creates just right atmosphere for the song.

Personally it reminds me a bit of Kid Cudi's Pursuit of Happiness video (which drake was in) only with a much more somber tone.
